Friendship Fortnight And Apologies

September 27th, 2016 by Ms Wynne

Apologies to all who having tried to enter the poetry competition and have not been able to. An error occurred with our website during September and a number of posts and beautiful poems were lost. Therefore I am extending the poetry competition closing date until October 10th.

So, Talbot’s Friendship Fortnight began this Monday 26th September. During this fortnight, we encourage you all to make an extra effort to be a good friend, by including someone, by sharing, by caring, by being kind, by lending a hand and by looking out for others.

In class you will discuss how Talbot is an Anti-bullying School  and you will learn about our Ten Shield Statements.

To celebrate friendship, Talbot Senior is running a Poetry Competition, closing date October 10th. All you need to do to enter is compose a short poem and send the handwritten version to Ms Wynne on Monday 10th October.

The title of your poem is “Showing Kindness”

If you are one of the winners, we will announce your name at our November assembly and present you with your prize!

Sam Maguire Cup

September 23rd, 2016 by Mr Byrne

Lately Mr Byrne’s class have been learning all about the Sam Maguire cup. The cup is given to the winners of the All Ireland Senior Football competition. Dublin are playing Mayo in the replay after they drew 0-15 each recently, and the winner keeps Sam Maguire for a year!

Sam Maguire was born in 1879 in Dunmanway, Co. Cork. At 20 years of age, he took a position with the postal service in London. There, he was involved in GAA affairs, he played for the Hibernians club and was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. Sam even played with London in the All-lreland football finals of 1900, 1901 and 1902! In 1925, he came back to west Cork to live. He then developed TB and died in 1927 aged 49.

After his death, his friends collected money and had a cup made in his memory. It is based on the famous Ardagh Chalice, which can be viewed in the National Museum. Here are some Sam Maguires we made in art out of clay!
