How many languages do we speak here at Talbot?

September 11th, 2015 by Mr. Stuart

We speak 20 languages (wow)How many languages do we speak at Talbot? Twenty!

Yes, twenty languages! Last year we asked all the children in the school. And this year we asked all the (new) 3rd class children, and all the new children in the older classes. And the result is 20 languages are spoken at home by children at Talbot or their parents.

Last year, because of an idea from 6th class, we put up the word “Welcome” in all the different languages at the school entrance. We’re doing the same again this year. We want EVERYONE to feel welcome. We want to INCLUDE everyone.

Here are the words in the 20 languages…

Afrikaans Welkom! (Afrikaans)
Algerian Amrehba sisswène (Algerian: Berber)
Arabic Ahlan wa sahlan! (Arabic)
Bosnian Dobrodošli! (Bosnian)
Chinese Huānyíng! (Chinese)
Creole (Mauritius Creole) Bienvenu! (Creole—Mauritian)
Filipino Maligayang pagdating! (Filipino)
French Bienvenue! (French)
Irish Fáilte! (Irish)
Italian Benvenuto! (Italian)
Latvian Laipni lūdzam! (Latvian)
Lithuanian Sveiki atvykę! (Lithuanian)
Polish Witamy! (Polish)
Romani Pozdravil! (Romani, Kalderas Romani)
Romanian Bine ai venit! (Romanian)
Russian Dobro pozhalovat’! (Russian)
Spanish ¡Bienvenido! (Spanish)
Turkish Hoşgeldiniz! (Turkish)
Vietnamese Chào mừng bạn! (Vietnamese)
Yoruba Kaabo (Yoruba)

What language — or languages — would you like to learn most?
(You can write a comment and tell us all.)
