Here, for you to enjoy at home, is the second of the two winning stories (of Talbot’s Got Writers! Christmas 2012). Congratulations, Anna.

Read it one time to enjoy it, and then look at it again to notice the amazing words and sentences. Anna wrote three stories for the competition, each brilliant.

This story is a fairy-tale. A beautiful, clever tale. It will enchant you. It will also puzzle you… unless you’re very clever and can work out the riddle!! Can you?

In a kingdom, far away, there lived a royal family in a beautiful castle. Mary, the Queen, and Edward, the King, were very happy but only a little thing saddened them. They had no children.

Then, after many unhappy years, a lovely baby girl was born. The whole kingdom rejoiced with the King and Queen, for they liked the King and Queen and hated to see them sad. Now that a child was born, they were over the moon. Everyone was happy, that is, except the wicked witch who lived in a tall tower in a nearby forest.

Winning Story: ‘The Blood Red Door’ by Megan Thorpe

Here, for you to enjoy at home, is one of the two winning stories (of Talbot’s Got Writers! Christmas 2012). Congratulations, Megan.

Like I said at Assembly, I am still blown away by Megan’s stunning writing style. Read it one time to enjoy it, and another time to learn from her how she creates entertaining stories.

1985

It was December 24^th. The afternoon before Christmas Day. I wanted to go to Horlock Cemetery where my granddad was buried. I like to visit him every Christmas but never as late as I was planning.

It was only me going to the graveyard all alone but I wasn’t afraid.

It was 11pm when I got there. I was planning on coming at 7:30pm but I got delayed because I was feeling happy-upset. I was happy to visit but upset because I missed him so much. He was very close to me. He understood everything. I felt I could tell him anything.

There were rumours about the graveyard being haunted by the ghost of Christmas. But I was not afraid.

I walked through the big black creaky gates. Granddad was near the back left hand side of the graveyard. I found his grave. When I seen it the horrid sight met my eyes.

Someone had dug up the grave and there were steep steps down to a blood red door!! I very slowly walked down the steps. My heart was racing! I reached for the knob covered in blood. I opened the door and I seen: The ghost of Christmas, Scrooge, Evil Jack Frost, Evil Snowmen, other evil men covered in scars, AND… MY GRANDDAD!?!?!

This was where the scary living-dead Christmas Creatures hid from the living.

“Hello”, I said.

Yes, like I announced at Assembly today, here is the list of amazing writers who entered the Christmas “Talbot’s Got Writers!” competition.

I urge you to ask them to lend you their story. They’re amazing stories, amazing writers!

It’s as if these writers have really studied how to make a story entertaining. They’ve clearly listened to their teachers. And they’ve practised, practised, practised… the best way to learn.
